Our library plays a vital role in supporting learning across the school. By working closely with classroom teachers, the Library Officer ensures students and staff have access to a wide range of resources, including fiction, non-fiction, and reference materials that enrich all subject areas. The library fosters a love of reading by encouraging children to read for pleasure, supporting guided and independent reading programs, and providing texts to suit different ability levels.
It also supports cross-curricular learning in areas such as STEM, history, geography, and the arts, while offering inclusive and diverse resources that reflect different cultures, experiences, and identities so every child feels represented.
Alongside this, the library helps students develop valuable skills in finding, understanding, and using information to become confident learners.
Most importantly, it is a welcoming space where curiosity, imagination, and a passion for learning can flourish. Where participation in events and programs fostering a student's love of books and reading, are encouraged. This includes events such as, Scholastic Book Club, book fairs, The Premier's Reading Challenge, CBCA Book Week and the Western Australian Young Readers Book Awards (WAYRBA). Students are also invited to share their ideas and suggest new resources, ensuring the library reflects their interests and supports their learning journey.
Students must have a library bag in order to borrow books. Books are borrowed for a period of one week, but can be renewed.
The number of books a student is able to borrow is dependent on their year level.
If books are not returned, children may not be allowed to borrow further books until their return, or they may be requested to leave books in their classroom.
If Library books or resources are lost or damaged, parents may be asked to pay the replacement cost.
RVPS operates a cloud based Library Management System. Being cloud based, it can be accessed from both home and school, by staff and students.
Features in this system include the student's ability to drive their own library experience:
searching for books by subject, author, series, genre or title;
see how many copies are available;
and view new books.
The search function can be used without a login.
Through their own unique dashboard:
students can create and save a list of books that they wish to read in the future;
view their loans, overdues and loan history.
Access to the web app can be found below.
